In a “Memories‘ retrospective published in 1931, a now-elderly Mr. J. S. PHILLIPS, an “Old Timer” from 19th-century San Francisco, CA – Mr. Phillips offered this recollection: “First the Genovese were here; they were the most skillful boatmen & fishermen that we had. After the Genovese came the Greeks…, hundreds of them, and then the little dark people from Naples and Sicily. Finally, last of all, came the PORTUGUESE. They fished in skiffs, mostly, because they were very poor.”
