Under the banner title of \u2018Annexation of Paradise Hills to the City of San Diego<\/em>\u2019 other<\/em> <\/em><\/strong>items of long-term value to San Diego\u2019s fishing industry<\/strong><\/em> budget changes included calling for the Amendment of the CITY CHARTER<\/strong> to allow<\/em> an ANNUAL TAX LEVY of 10\u00a2 per $100 of assessed valuation to be used for HARBOR DEVELOPMENT<\/em><\/strong>. The Chamber of Commerce and other civic bodies are very actively campaigning for the adoption of this item. — Probably the first project of development to be undertaken in case this measure is approved by the voters will be the:
(1<\/strong>) Extension<\/strong> of the present Broadway pier<\/strong>, the installation of overhead passenger ramps, and other facilities.
(2<\/strong>) Of great importance to the FISHING and BOATING interests is the filling and bulkheading<\/em> of the areas at the foot of 28th STREET<\/strong> and the construction of two<\/strong> mole-type<\/strong><\/em> piers at this site<\/strong>. It is planned to remove the present FISH CANNERIES<\/strong> and BOAT BUILDING<\/strong> plants to this area<\/em> as soon as possible. Relocating the canneries on this 9-acre pier<\/strong> will enable the deep-sea fishing boats to come alongside and unload without many of the current difficulties at current sites. The bulkhead area<\/em> between the two piers will be approximately 3,600\u2019 x 1,000\u2019<\/strong>, will should allow the establishment there of nine<\/strong> boat-building concerns, each having a frontage on deep<\/em> water of approx. 400\u2019<\/strong>.
(3<\/strong>) Another mole-type<\/em><\/strong> pier<\/strong> is planned for the foot of 5th Ave., downtown<\/strong>; as well as the paving<\/em> of Belt<\/strong>, Harbor<\/strong>, and Atlantic Streets<\/strong>, and the making of a *HUB*<\/strong> at the foot of Market St.<\/strong> (formerly H Street) suitable for ferry landings, etc. as well as another<\/em> mole-type pier<\/strong> at the foot of Grape Street<\/strong>.
(4<\/strong>) Dredging<\/em><\/strong> of the channel at La Playa<\/strong> and Roseville<\/strong> on the bayside of Point Loma<\/strong><\/em> is also planned.
HARBOR COMMITTEE ACTIVE<\/strong> \u2013 The campaign for the passage of this measure is being handled by the Harbor Committee<\/em><\/strong> of the Chamber of Commerce<\/em><\/strong>, whose membership includes the managers of the various fish canneries, fishermen\u2019s associations, fresh fish companies and boat building concerns in San Diego.\u201d ~~~ *Note:<\/strong> This new tax was expected to produce about $250,000 annually<\/strong> (equivalent to $4,105,666 today<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 ed.) specifically for harbor development purposes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
