{"id":486,"date":"2024-01-21T16:42:58","date_gmt":"2024-01-21T16:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jeffmadruga.com\/wp\/?p=486"},"modified":"2024-01-21T16:42:58","modified_gmt":"2024-01-21T16:42:58","slug":"early-pa-lecture-on-the-azores-in-sd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jeffmadruga.com\/wp\/2024\/01\/21\/early-pa-lecture-on-the-azores-in-sd\/","title":{"rendered":"Early PA &#8211; LECTURE ON THE AZORES in SD"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>  \u201c<strong>THE AZORES ISLANDS \u2013 The Unity Club Listened to an Excellent Lecture Upon the Subject<\/strong> \u2013 The <strong>Unity Club<\/strong>, which met last evening at the <strong>Unitarian Church<\/strong>, corner of Tenth &amp; F Sts., was favored with a highly interesting lecture from <strong>Dr. McDaniels<\/strong> on the scenery and various beauties of the <strong>AZORES<\/strong>, together with a <em>general outline<\/em> of a <em><strong>Portuguese life<\/strong><\/em>, their superior <em><strong>mechanism<\/strong><\/em> (? &#8211; ed.), <em><strong>wages<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>etc.<\/strong><\/em>, all of which Dr. McDaniels has learned through observation.  He showed some very fine specimens of <em><strong>lace<\/strong><\/em> made by the Portuguese women from the inner fiber of the <em><strong>aloe<\/strong><\/em> (or what is known in this country as the <em>century plant<\/em>). This lace was of a quality which surpasses in elegance anything ever manufactured in America.  He also exhibited an elegant <em>shawl<\/em>, which required <em>three months and four days\u2019 labor by a Portuguese woman to complete<\/em>.  This shawl, after completion, was sold to Dr. McDaniels for <strong>$4.35<\/strong>, which goes to show how <em><strong>comparatively <\/strong><u><strong>low<\/strong><\/u><strong> wages<\/strong><\/em> are in that country.  <em><strong>Ordinary day laborers get 14\u00a2 and 16\u00a2 PER DAY<\/strong><strong> for their labor, while skilled labor is worth from 26\u00a2 to 30\u00a2 PER DAY<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/em>(<em>equivalent to approx. $4.86 [unskilled] to $9.75 [skilled] <strong>pay <\/strong><u><strong>dai<\/strong><\/u><strong>ly<\/strong> nowadays \u2013 ed.<\/em>).<em><strong>  But women\u2019s wages are still <\/strong><u><strong>lower<\/strong><\/u><strong>.<\/strong><\/em>  After the lecture a number of photographs and views of a great many Portuguese individuals were spread out for the inspection of everyone present; which all enjoyed.
