Erskine Wood, designated by the <strong>War Shipping Administration<\/strong> to <em>negotiate<\/em> with <strong><em>owners<\/em><\/strong> <em>of tunaboats<\/em> taken over by the <strong>U.S. Navy<\/strong> early in the war, will arrive here tomorrow to confer with San Diegans desiring to <em><strong>re<\/strong><\/em>&#8211;<em><strong>purchase<\/strong><\/em> their craft <em>from<\/em> the Government, the <strong>AMERICAN FISHERMEN\u2019S TUNABOAT<\/strong> <strong>ASSOCIATION<\/strong> announced.  Wood arrived in <strong>San Pedro<\/strong> on Monday to survey fishing craft there, and several San Diegans whose vessels are in the northern port have gone there to confer with him.  <em><u><strong>Former owners<\/strong><\/u><strong> are given the f<\/strong><u><strong>irst<\/strong><\/u><strong> opportunity to bid on the boats.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FOUR IN PORT NOW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  The Association reported that <em>four<\/em> <strong>San Diego<\/strong> boats \u2013 the <em><strong>\u2018AZOREANA\u2019<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>\u2018CITY OF SAN DIEGO\u2019<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>\u2018SANTA INEZ\u2019<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>\u2018SAO JOAO\u2019 <\/strong><\/em>\u2013 now are <em>here<\/em> in port awaiting disposal.  And at <strong>San Pedro<\/strong> are the <em><strong>\u2018BELLE of PORTUGAL\u2019<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>\u2018PICAROTO\u2019<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>\u2018QUEEN MARY\u2019<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>\u2018ST. GEORGE\u2019<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>\u2018NORTHWESTERN\u2019<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>\u2018MADIERENSE\u2019<\/strong><\/em>.  The <strong>149\u2019<\/strong> <em><strong>\u2018NORMANDIE\u2019<\/strong><\/em>, (the largest tunaboat in existence), is due here in San Diego on Monday, and the <em><strong>\u2018CONTI BIANCO\u2019<\/strong><\/em> was reported to have left Pearl Harbor yesterday.  Altogether <strong>about<\/strong> <strong>70 tunaboats<\/strong> were taken over by the <strong>Navy<\/strong> and <em>converted<\/em> into patrol craft. Knowland), as the (post WWII \u2013 ed.) <em><strong>trustee<\/strong><\/em> <em><strong>for humanity<\/strong><\/em>, must present a <strong><em>united front<\/em><\/strong> to the rest of the world and to <em>achieve<\/em> this unity&#8230;, <strong>Secretary of Commerce Henry A. Wallace<\/strong> must <em><strong>LEAVE<\/strong><\/em> the Cabinet, <strong>U. S. Senator WILLIAM F. KNOWLAND<\/strong> (Rep.) declared here yesterday.  His statement <em>climaxed<\/em> a busy day here in which he addressed the Convention Session of the California <strong>League of Cities<\/strong>, spoke at a combined meeting of local<strong> Exchange Clubs<\/strong>, and <em><strong>probed the problems of shipbuilders, fishermen, and canners in a personal inspection<\/strong><\/em>&#8230;(<strong>*<\/strong><em><strong>Note<\/strong><\/em><strong>:<\/strong> Nearly <em>ALL<\/em> of this article is taken up with the then-current, \u2018<em>explosive<\/em>\u2019 leak, and reactions, into the national press that then-Secretary Wallace was quoted as having used the word \u201c<em>appease<\/em>\u201d in a statement regarding Russia, immediately taken as a \u201c<em>go-easy-on-Russia<\/em>\u201d spin\/opinion by <em>many<\/em>, including Sen. Knowland.  But the <em><u>main<\/u><\/em> interest to <em><u>this<\/u><\/em> particular \u2018<strong>PA of San Diego-oriented<\/strong>\u2019 listing is focused on the \u2018<em>shipbuilders, fishermen, and canners in a personal inspection<\/em> portion \u2013 ed.) &#8216;\u2026He talked with fishermen, canners, and shipbuilders in an afternoon-long inspection trip of the waterfront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VISITED SHIPYARDS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  First he visited the <strong>LYNCH SHIPBUILDING<\/strong> yards where he saw the <strong>110\u2019<\/strong> tuna clipper <em><strong>\u2018LILIANA\u2019<\/strong><\/em> under construction, and talked with <strong>Capt. JOE MARQUES<\/strong>, who is readying his big <em><strong>\u2018NORMANDIE\u2019<\/strong><\/em> for a cruise to the <strong>Galapagos<\/strong> fishing grounds. The <em><strong>\u2018Normandie\u2019<\/strong><\/em> (launched in 1938 &#8211; ed.) has come back after <em>four<\/em> years helping the U.S. Navy win the Southwest Pacific war.  When Sen. Knowland was with Mr. <strong>Harold Cary<\/strong>, Manager of <strong>Lynch<\/strong> yard, and Mr. <strong>George E. Campbell<\/strong> of the <strong>CAMPBELL MACHINE CO.<\/strong> yards, he talked shipping problems, and Mr. <strong>Dave Campbell<\/strong> of <em><strong>Campbell<\/strong><\/em> yards told him San Diego shipbuilding is suffering from a <em>shortage<\/em> of almost everything that goes into a ship.  At the <strong>SAN DIEGO PACKING CO.<\/strong> and the <strong>HIGH SEAS TUNA PACKING CO.<\/strong>, Knowland saw fish move from the tuna clippers to cans, and heard the Managers of these plants voice their problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SITUATION SIZED UP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  Escorted to the yards and packing plants by <strong>George Campbell, JOE MEDINA, tuna fisherman, CHARLES LEANDERS \u2013 <\/strong>President, &amp;<strong> George Wallace<\/strong>, Vice-President of the<strong> AMERICAN FISHERMEN\u2019S TUNABOAT ASSOCIATION<\/strong>; Knowland said he got an interesting and informative view of the local situation.  Mr. Leanders and Mr. Wallace laid before him the plight of <strong>18 San Diego fishermen<\/strong>, whose boats were <em>seized <\/em>by the government at the start of <strong>World War II<\/strong> and were sunk in the conquest of Japan.
